Antigone Promotional Campaign

Created for Hamline University's Department of Performance, Production & Community

When approaching the design for such an iconic show, I turned to the concept director, Laura Dougherty, set out to capture in this production: "Rite to Rupture." This script, written by Sophokles and translated by the brilliant Anne Carson, revolves around one woman and her moral imperative to do right even if it is deemed wrong by a tyrannical government. There is a through line in the script of things being out of place or dirty, and the production leaned into this by utilizing an angular, minimalist set, designed by Steven Read.

Utilizing the concept and scenic design, I aimed to highlight the "rupture" and visually represent the crack in the system Antigone creates. As I was walking out of the theater one afternoon I noticed these cracks in the sidewalk beneath me. I snapped a picture, and pulled that into Illustrator to create the vector of a crack, and layered that into the text. The typography is weighted and bold, much like the column that loomed over the stage throughout the show, waiting to entomb Antigone. The social media campaign adhered to the visual style set by the poster and included the same bold typeface, cream and greys, rough edges, and hidden or layered elements.
